1,000 Pounds of Gear and a Long Way to Go: COAST-X Begins Tomorrow!

Everything is ready to rock for COAST-X!

Over the past three weeks, we’ve been deep in logistics mode, shipping two snowmachines to Bethel along with our Alaska Gear Company sleds and roughly 1,000 lbs of gear. That includes tents, scientific equipment, field supplies, fuel jugs, and everything we’ll need for the traverse (hopefully). Huge thanks to Everts Air Cargo for getting it there safely!

Just this past week, we sent out our food and a few final odds and ends with Alaska Air Cargo. At this point, everything is staged and waiting patiently in Bethel for our arrival on March 18th.

On the ground side, we’ve secured all of our permits and built strong connections with partners in Bethel, as well as in Chevak and Hooper Bay, our first stops along the trail. These relationships are at the heart of this project.

We’ll spend the next few days in Bethel meeting with community members and local school groups, then head out on Saturday toward Chevak and Hooper Bay to connect with folks in the region and some of our ACTION team members.

Before heading out this morning, I had a chance to visit with students at UPark Elementary in Fairbanks, where I shared what this traverse is all about. They’ll be following along as we travel, and we’re planning to check in with them via Zoom from the trail to share updates and what we’re seeing along the way.

More updates coming soon from Bethel as we get underway.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
